Information about the need to charge electric vehicles and cables
Charging mode
Before discussing the various types of connectors, you need to understand the modes that can be used to charge the EV. The following four charging modes define the communication management mode between the charging infrastructure and the vehicle:
Mode I
This requires charging from a traditional non dedicated household outlet through the power cord usually provided with the vehicle. Here, there is no communication between the infrastructure and your car. This means that there is no real control over the charging process, so this solution is not recommended as a common method of vehicle charging.
If you prefer charging at home, make sure to have a professional electrician check your power supply to avoid overheating the circuit.
Mode 2
This mode also needs to be charged from the traditional household socket, which is dedicated or non dedicated this time. Unlike mode 1, charging is directly controlled by a device integrated in the charging cable.
Mode 3
Mode 3 corresponds to charging through a charger directly integrated into the charging station or wall box. Recommended for daily charging.
Charging stations can be located in public areas (streets, parking lots, etc.) or private areas (homes, workplaces, etc.) and have dedicated circuits, making this mode safer than charging from a home socket. It usually uses alternating current (AC) to provide normal to fast charging (between 3.7 kW and 22 kW).
Mode 4
This mode corresponds to charging mainly on highways and some parking lots and public places. They provide a rated power of at least 50 kW in DC, which means that a considerable range can be obtained quickly (usually between 20 and 30 minutes).
The charging time may vary depending on the technical characteristics of the vehicle.
Connector types you need to know
Life would be much easier if only car manufacturers could agree on a standard universal connector! However, we can observe the trend of connector type standardization in Europe. Some connectors are becoming more and more common, while others are losing the market and are only used in a few EV Models.
To make things clearer, we will distinguish between the connection type on the charging infrastructure and the connection type installed on the vehicle.
